چکیده

The success of LTE heterogeneous networks heavily depends on the efficient interplay between user association and uplink/downlink resource allocation. Much work has been devoted to investigate this interaction and to capture the involved trade-offs. Nevertheless, different schemes are based on different assumptions and optimization objectives (e.g., improve throughput, delay, load balancing, etc.) So, it remains rather unclear how these two problems should interact. Additionally, most of the literature in this context ignore the backhaul network which is expected to be a key performance bottleneck in future networks and thus it threatens their performance. In this work, we develop a framework that efficiently tackles the interplay of (i) user-association, (ii) access radio, and (iii) backhaul resource allocation for a family of different objective functions. We propose an algorithm that reduces the complexity of this multi-variable problem by decomposing it in three optimization levels and guarantees convergence to a global optimal point. Simulation results validate the performance benefits of the proposed joint optimization approach compared to traditional techniques. Index Terms user association, backhaul, queueing theory, uplink, downlink, hetnets, resource allocation, dynamic TDD.

Backhaul-Aware Decoupled Uplink and Downlink User Association, Subcarrier Allocation, and Power Control in FiWi HetNets

Decoupling the uplink and downlink user association improves the throughput of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and balances the traffic load of macro- and small- base stations. Recently, fiber-wireless HetNets (FiWi-HetNets) have been considered as viable solutions for access networks. To improve the accuracy of user association and resource allocation algorithms in FiWi-HetNets, the capacity ...

HoP: Hierarchize then Optimize: A distributed framework for User Association and Flexible TDD Allocation for Access and Backhaul Networks

The success of future heterogeneous networks (HetNets) heavily depends on the interplay between user association and resource allocation on both the access and backhaul network. While user association is key to improve both the user and network performance, it is becoming a multi-objective optimization problem that should consider the number and type of BS in range. Furthermore, the increasing ...

Backhaul-aware Joint User Association and Resource Allocation for Energy-constrained HetNets

Cellular networks are now rapidly evolving to the renewable heterogeneous network (HetNet) architectures, where a mixture of macro base stations (BSs) and small cell BSs coexist. Particularly, these BSs are partly-powered or self-powered by renewable energy sources (RES). In this context, joint user association and resource allocation is challenging. In addition, wireless backhaul is rapidly be...

A Mobile Multihop Relay Dynamic TDD Scheme for Cellular Networks

In this paper, we present an analytical framework for the evaluation of the uplink performance of multihop cellular networks based on dynamic time division duplex (TDD). New wireless broadband protocols, such as WiMAX, WiBro, and 3G-LTE apply TDD, and mobile communication protocols under standardization (e.g., IEEE802.16j) are investigating mobile multihop relay (MMR) as a future technology. In...
